In 1979, the Ethics Committee was established for the purpose of establishing guidelines on research studies to be conducted in Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC).
In 2010, the Ethics Committee was established through VMMC Memo Order #58 dated 02 November 2010 and henceforth, the Committee was renamed the Institutional Review Board (IRB).
The VMMC Institutional Review Board is composed of medical and scientific professionals and non-medical, non-scientific members and was created to safeguard the rights, safety, and well-being of all subjects involved in a clinical trial and to provide public assurance of that protection. The Board aims to do this by reviewing and approving and/or providing favorable opinion on the clinical trial protocol, the suitability of the investigators, the process of obtaining and documenting informed consent of the trial subjects, the facilities, methods and materials to be used in the clinical trial.
The VMMC IRB adheres strictly to all the policies and guidelines of the international Conference on Harmonisation-Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP). As such, close monitoring of compliance to ICH-GCP Guidelines is the norm in the conduct of any study or clinical trial which the IRB approves.
